Can someone explain sort of how this system is set up? I know its conventional P25/Astro digital and i understand there are multiple sites per post that multicast radio traffic. Are the radios programmed to automatically roam between sites somehow similar to IP site connect or what? I never quite understood.

Short answer is "I think so".

More longer winded:

Each post has several transmitter sites within the post area. For example, Post 4 Elizabethtown, has seven sites. There are two "channels" for each post. A is the alternate channel and B is the primary dispatch channel. Thus for Elizabethtown their primary channel is "4B".

The trooper will select "4B" on the mobile radio. That mobile radio will check all of the sites associated with the post for the best signal and tune to it automatically. This is similar to a voter/comparator on a repeated system with several receiving sites.

If a trooper travels outside of a post area, he/she will manually switch his/her mobile radio to the channel for the new area. For example if the E-town trooper goes into the Post 3 Bowling Green area the trooper will manually change the radio from 4B to 3B.

I am unsure of the type of radios that are in their patrol vehicles. However, They are using P25 conventional. What that means is, you hand program their conventional frequencies and set your squelch mode to P25 along with their Network Access Code (NAC) or you can simply download them from the radio reference website. Your location will determine the frequencies that you will need.

Thanks. The reason I ask is that using the P25 one-freq trunk feature the radio id`s have changed. The id`s are now 777xxx along with 9999xxx and digits under 2000. Thought perhaps they had changed radio models.

The only thing coming to mind is Car to Car (453.300) also known as "Tac". Every so often I'll hear a unit tell another to "switch to tac".

Does anyone know what is going on with Post 2 St Charles site? It is just a constant static noise with no traffic. It is the only site I can pick up good in my area the only other site I can get is the sacramento site but its weak.

This may be the wrong forum but it's the only frequency this happens on. About 5 times out of 10 transmitions my scanner will pick up the freq as if it was a analog scanner and has the " machine gun" sound. I have to push scan for it to cycle through scan and it will then pick it up digital. It doesn't happen every time, and it only happens on the mayfield tower channel B. I have a good signal from my house. I show four bars on my portable at the same location in my house. I have programmed the channel in a different scan bank and it continues to do this. Is there anything else I can try? I scan 5 other p25 channels and this does not happen on them. Thanks

Are you running the latest firmware and updates?
You could could try an outside antenna.
You may be hearing NXDN or DMR from another location due to the fact that the 2096 and 96 does not use NAC receive.
I am in Northwest Tn with a 197 106 18 668 TRX-1 TRX-2 436 536 996p2 and hear all the Post A sites with no trouble.

I just always thought it was because the 2096 didn't have NAC support and if it was a weak transmission it wouldn't know that it was a digital transmission and open up the squelch for a analog signal.

I have thought it was the signal also , but I'm picking the frequency up with 4 out of 5 bars at the same place in my house. I have also moved it to different locations thinking something in the perticular room was causing interference, but it still happens. It's happening while I'm picking up the channel on my p25 portable and the portable is loud and clear. . As long as I ht scan it will cycle around and pick it up just fine second time around

No CPU update or firmware for 96 or 2096. Only dsp updates up to 1.4
.... And no nac support. You program conventional p25 as FM.... P25 trs as mot. Use arc96 or win96 to program.
