Although the winter storm was days ago I forgot to report my findings for IDOT. Nothing new to report. All the same talkgroups that's in the DB I got from District 4 and 6 for IDOT.
. Just be thankful you're not on the east coast right now! You'd have more action than you could handle... 73, n9zas

Over the last week I have been listening to the 108 site in Lake County. I heard Maintenance Garage M4 (2016) active on 94. And also heard IDOT District 1: Northeast and McHenry Secondary (1402) active. Also this morning there was a bunch of Technicians traffic all ENC of course.

Everytime I come home and turn up the volume, it seems there's 2 new encrypted tg causing earbleed for every one I program into a starcom21 list then lock out! Usually tg's are 29xx as of the last few days. :( 73, n9zas

TG 3452 has been added to the McHenry County subcategory of the STARCOM21 database page.

Past loggings of this TG and RIDs indicate that this was likely Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District.

Very little has been posted about activity on / use of this and TG 1891 (which they've IDd as "Fire 2" in the past). CenCom talkgroups? Other agencies using these TGs as well? Anyone???

I have 1891 logged as dispatch, with 1892-1896 as tac talkgroups. I believe I based those off of old NWCDS meeting minutes where they talked about gaining access to the Barrington-Countryside talkgroups for interop, but I couldn't tell you which month that was now.

Why NWCD fire FDMA

I don't know why I waited so long to ask as they have been on FDMA for at least a month. And why is the new Glenveiw fire TDMA and NWCD fire is FDMA. Any info on this appreciated.

For a conversation to exist as TDMA (Phase 2) ALL radios affiliated to the talkgroup must be Phase 2 capable and programmed as such. If just one radio is operating in FDMA (Phase 1) then the conversation will go out as FDMA.

It is a good bet that there are radios out there, perhaps possessed by mutual aid partners of the FD's in NWCD, that are still FDMA. Glenview, as a new user of SC21, probably doesn't have this issue, all radios they or their partners use are Phase 2 capable and programmed.

Rich I am aware of the two different menus being FDMA and TDMA and if one radio is FDMA capible then both are FDMA. NWCD system is a TDMA, the firegrounds are TDMA but the dispatch channel Fire 1.2.3. etc are FDMA. Glenview is fully TDMA unless Mount Prospect goes mutual aid with them and then both are FDMA. Could it be because of the robotic dispatcher or is there another issue with it. Me as a tax payer replacing both Lake county and NWCD communication when STARCOM 21 already was up and running and they went in opposite directions on the communication system and now we go to STARCOM 21 paying more money out replacing existing communications due to upgrading. Makes no sense but the government doesn't have sense at alll...spend...spend..spend. I hope this state goes bankrupt with spending.

It is likely that MP has not replaced their SC21 radios with TDMA capable ones yet. They were probably being fiscally responsible and not replacing their older FDMA-only radios with new and expensive TDMA ones. Many NWCD agencies had replaced their radios when they were still on the P-16 system with P25 capable radios and didn't want to spend the big bucks needed to replace them so soon when they switched over to SC21. That only required reprogramming.

Glenview, being new to SC21 and not having invested in P25 radios before, bought more current radios which are TDMA capable.

Once NWCD's radios require replacement, either by age (due to obsolescence) or decree (being forced to by SC21 to maximize capacity) they will complete the Phase 2 switchover. At some point I think you will see SC21 require customers in the area to be Phase 2 capable to ensure maximum capacity and these holdouts will need to replace their radios that are not TDMA.

The dispatch chanel has started as a TDMA and the last couple of months the dispatch channel has been FDMA. All NWCD radios are TDMA, as well as the firegrounds are currently TDMA. MTPR radios are TDMA. Just trying to see why the dispatch channel and only the dispatch channels are FDMA. So Rich that doesn't answer anything so far but a review which I knew on the two different radios. But thanks for trying to answer a question which you received a big letter F for your grade. Thanks Further more all of NWCD radios are TDMA from chillin with the BFGR boys.

Back when NWCD first switched over, they did several tests regarding FDMA vs. TDMA as well as encryption vs. clear due to several user complaints about audio quality in the first month or two (at least one HE officer I talked to said it was the worst sounding radio he'd ever heard when they were still using TDMA). The current setup is what they determined to have the best audio quality that fit their needs the best. I would guess that this was intended to be a temporary solution, as they were dealing with some serious problems with their CAD system at the time. And yes, all agencies got new radios when the switchover occurred.
