As has been pointed out, the ads you see are a reflection of your browsing history.

If, while viewing the RadioReference forums, you saw ads for women's swim suits, then I guess you (or your wife/girlfriend/sister/mother) used your computer to shop for swim suits.

I just logged out and got an ad for a web hosting service, which is appropriate because I've been looking for a web host for one of my projects.

I hope you enjoy looking at women's swim suits! I enjoy doing that myself. But, I also know that everything I do on the Internet leaves a trail.

OK.. I paused my ad blocker as asked but I'm still getting the annoying popup every time I log into the site and sometimes when I change pages within the site. If this is the way it works, then where's the incentive? Or is this a way to get people to buy premium subscriptions?
As posted by the OWNER it is to get you to buy a PREMINUM SUBSCRIPTION.
I have no issue with turning off my ad blocker IF it would meant I won't see the annoying pop-up that tells me to turn it off, even though I already have. As long as that continues, I'm leaving my blocker on.

Radio Reference isn't the only fish in the sea and since the owner has chosen not to address my original question, I have decided to leave.

Folks, when you are outraged and appalled and feel like telling us how things should be around here, always remember these 3 things:

1) I’m having a little fun with most of you
2) We know what we are doing here - just look around
3) we care deeply about our customers, friends, partners, and visitors.

I am only an occasional visitor to the site so just saw this thread yesterday. I personally have a rule that any site that I am considering disabling my ad blocker for I test out in a VM first. Holy crap am I glad that I did. I had an ad appear on your home page that appeared to be advertising for a car however, it immediately started attempting to push a drive-by download that contained a ransomware. The VM used for this test was only created about 15 minutes prior to accessing the site. I was able to kill everything before it could cause any harm but I don’t think the average person would have been able to.

looking at some of the other posts I can definitely see where trackers from previous websites had helped pick the advertisement that they received but in this case there was no tracking history so I just got a random advertisement and got unlucky. The ad provider that you have chosen to use is notoriously known for not properly screening advertisements and just googling it shows a ton of history over the last decade of many other instances such as mine.

based on what I saw firsthand I have to respectfully decline your request to disable my ad blocker. If the ad provider were to be changed to one that is better about filtering the contents of their ads then I might reconsider but for now it’s just too risky.

I hope that this message does not get lost in the back-and-forth of chaos that is going on but I figured after what I saw this needed to be said.

Please provide the technical details on this. We've never, ever had a report or complaint of an ad that "pushes" ransomware through ads on our site. Ever. In the history of this business. And trust me when I tell you that we have a number of security researchers and very knowledgable people who would have immediately reached out to me directly to discuss such a claim that you are making.

If the ad provider were to be changed to one that is better about filtering the contents of their ads then I might reconsider but for now it’s just too risky.

We use two ad providers. Google Adsense and Amazon. That's it. Period.

So I'm going to want to hear a little more details on your claim that Google Adsense is distributing Ransomware, because that is a bold claim.

What specific ad provider are you referring to here?

He's talking about Google - which is the largest online ad market in the world and is amazingly efficient and successful in delivering quality targeted advertisements. 95% of all our ad delivery is done through them.

But like any ad or content provider, they've also been hit by malicious actors and those that have chosen to try to deliver malicious content to end users through ads, but they are clearly the most experienced and best at ferreting out that stuff and not allowing it to occur.

We're going to start implementing gatekeeping for those that have adblockers installed and who are not premium subscribers. It will be a gentle reminder a few times a day for non-premium subscribers who have ad blockers enabled.

You can use this thread to complain to me that this is a violation of your rights, and you'll be quiting RadioReference, and you'll be reporting us to the BBB. Flame away...
Wow, no problem supporting you. I understand the time and effort it takes to run a site. I listened to the streams, only seemed right. Not sure why anyone has problems with a couple bucks a month if they are getting a service out of the content. I hate ads, but love the content. Please! Take my money!

Been to Hell before. I have to imagine the ribbing the locals get from that name. As a matter of fact, I was talking with someone a few years ago and I was told to go to Hell. I pull out a souvenir from there and said, Been there done that. I never did understand why he got all flustered. Then another time someone told me there was no Hell. I said Bet me and showed them a map.

I'd rather get off at Exit 69 too... It's better than going to "Hell"... Michigan that is... :ROFLMAO:
