I see those setting too. I'm not sure how changing the Digital Threshold Mode from Auto and changing the Digital Threshold Level from 8 would allow to hear KSP on my SDS100 or BCD436.

It is a situation where adjusting these values can improve audio decoding when you do receive a digital signal.

I have yet to see a digital system, conventional or trunked, that didn't have some kind of audio. It might be broken or garbled, but you knew something was there.

There is a certain algorithm the scanner uses to decode digital audio. Adjusting the Digital Threshold Level sets a point where the algorithm starts to fine tune. Digital Threshold Mode is whether the scanner keeps trying to fine tune itself (Auto) or just accepts the value you enter (Manual).

These settings apply only to the 436. The SDS uses something else, the filters.

No one size fits all. I use Manual/7 for MetroSafe. Next door works fine with Auto/8, with Auto/8 being the factor default setting. I have been unable improve KSP - it is pretty clear with the Auto/8.

With you being in Louisville, I'm surprised you are not able to hear KSP. I get Post 4 and 12 from three towers (Fairgrounds, Shepherdsville and Ekron) though I have Ekron turned off. I get Post 12 from the Shepherdsville tower (which is actually Bernheim). More often than not, I get Post 5 from Lagrange, but I suspect I'm right at the edge based on signal strength.

I'm less than 5 miles away to the north west from the fairgrounds. I created an E-town favorite with only the fairground tower and never received anything on the 100 or 486. When I have the 100, 200, 486 and 586 connected to an external indoor antenna the only tower I received E-town on is the Shepherdsville tower. I also receive Frankfort on the Shepherdsville tower. It makes no since that I'm hitting the Shepherdsville tower that's 25 miles away and not the fairgrounds tower which is less than 5 miles away. Since I'm hitting a tower that's 25 miles away I don't think changing the Digital Threshold Level will make a difference. Thanks for the reply.

That sounds somewhat similar to what I experience in here in Bell County.

I can receive certain towers that are 20 plus miles away from me good most of the time. But in most cases, I can barely receive a tower that is less than 10 miles away from me.

To be more specific, I receive the Bear Branch (Leslie) tower (20+ miles away) better than the Ashers Fork (Clay County) tower that is less than 10 miles away.

And to beat it all, I'm not using a directional antenna, and both towers are North of me.

The antenna I'm using right now is a whistler WMM-460. But this happens with any antenna I use.

Bizarre. I'm 6.5 away and have no problems. 453.95 on NAC 186 is what I'm using for 4B. Sounds like some kind of radio wall between you and Fairgrounds.

There isn't a hill or tall building that between me and the fairgrounds. Tomorrow I'm going to drive towards the fairgrounds and see at what point I start pickup E-town. Yes it is bizarre.

Just heard them at 11:05 PM, so that transmitter is up and running okay.

E-town was very busy a few hours ago. They had 2 vehicle chases this evening. With one vehicle ending in up in Freeman lake and the other vehicle going 125 mph that ended with an arrest.

The frequency of car chases has surprised me since I started monitoring KSP last year. I-64 between G-town and Louisville gets a LOT of action.

Equally as surprising is how quickly the pursuit officers are told to stand down. Almost every chase I've heard this summer has ended in the suspects riding off into the sunset. Who knows if they ever got caught later or not. It's odd. Why even chase them at all?

I'm not so sure that KSP gives up on chases. The chase that KSP was involved with the car going 125 mph on Saturday ended with an arrest. If it has been a LMPD cop that spotted the car going 125 mph the chase would have never had started. Here in Louisville giving up on a chase is common. But it really depends on what started the chase. If it's a traffic violation the chase usually doesn't start. I can't remember what started the chase but LMPD was involved in a chase. After a short time the cops were told to stop chasing. As the cops started to disengage the car they were pursuing stop and the driver took off running. After a short foot chase they caught the driver. It turns out the driver was wanted for questioning in a homicide. I think the criminals and gang thugs know the cops won't pursue them so why not run.

Just an FYI the new KSP/Statewide 7/800MHz system is being discussed here. KSP has started to license out 700MHz sites in the Post 1 & 2 district areas.

A few years ago when Richard Sanders was KSP Commissioner he was a speaker at a luncheon that I attended. Sanders said something about a new radio system that is being looked into. Being a scanner nut I had to ask about encryption. All he said was that encryption is a possibility. Hopefully KSP will have the dispatch channels in the clear and have encryption channels to use when needed.

Couple of weeks ago I heard post 2 (Madisonville) make an announcement on post B (main dispatch) that stumped me. This was on an weekday afternoon, I don't remember the day or date. Post advised "All post 3 units switch to channel 7" and I didn't hear anything from post 2 for over 2 hours and then normal traffic resumed.

Anyone else hear this or experience this from KSP?

Anyone know why I keep hearing a beep every 5 or 6 seconds on 13A Bear Branch Transmitter?

It won't let me attach a clip though.

Somebody probably accidentally turned the channel marker on this channel on the console if there’s nothing going on… hard to say for sure.

When I’ve tested systems I’ve used channel marker before to keep audio going automatically while I’m driving but I doubt it’s that.

Oh okay. It just started like an hour or so ago to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks for the reply!

Question: What would cause my scanners to receive A channels better than B channels or vice versa?

On post 10, I can receive Barbourville B channel but not A. And I can receive Pineville A channel pretty good, but not B.

I don't understand this, because they're both from the same transmitter location right?

Does anyone have a good radio number list for KSP? I have been hearing some varying numbers on the radio recently and wander who they are.

Example of some I've heard are 7502, 7512, 7811, 9505, etc.

I've heard #76xx as Fish and Wildlife Officers working in Scott and Fayette County, I've also heard #73xx Fish and Wildlife units at Taylorsville lake. Attorney General units are just AG-xx, not sure who 95xx units are.
