Update on Verona: All equipment has been received by the radio shop and is ready to be programmed. One of the two dispatch consoles at police headquarters will be upgraded with the new NJICS equipment and portables will be issued. The plan as I understand it is to operate using portables while the mobiles are installed.
Once all agencies have had their portables issued and tested, operations will switch over from the EDACS system. They hope to accomplish this in the next month and have everything done by the end of the year.
They are planning to use several of the UHF frequencies that are now in service on the EDACS system as paging frequencies for fire and ems.
This is a pretty big change for the volunteers. All firefighters and members of the rescue squad currently have their own portables. In the future, only officers will get their own radio, and everyone else will get a minitor 6 pager.
Needless to say there were a lot of unhappy volunteers at the meeting.
The Motorola rep also told me he is actively in discussions with several local Essex municipalities , including at the county level, trying to get more agencies to make the switch. He also related that a certain Passaic county town with its own trunked system, is not happy with their systems performance and is also contemplating a change.
Also the word is that the Verona police dispatch will remain in the clear, but they will have a second encrypted talk group for "sensitive " communications.
So we are on our way. Stay tuned!
