There may be other uses, but my example is the road trip. I use the global database and satellite tracking on my SDS radios when driving the interstates. Not interested in the local law enforcement chatter, just the highway patrol, fire and ambulance TGIDs. The screens are impossible to read while driving, so I rely on the Alert Color codes.
Two issues with the global database: local and state law enforcement agencies are grouped under Service Type Law Enforcement, and there is no Alert Color coding. Let me quickly do a hats-off to the folks who maintain the database. We wouldn't be here if it were not for them.
The Proscan find and replace would allow me to "Avoid" service type "Law Enforcement" with one sweep. Next, TGID "Highway Patrol" would be assigned service type "Custom 1" (to dodge the Law Enforcement avoid), and the alert color would be green (my example), service type "Fire Dispatch" becomes Alert Color red, and "EMS Dispatch" becomes yellow.
With three or four tweaks, I customize my SDS100 or SDS200 for the vacation beach trip across the Carolinas. My wife is pleased that the background chatter has been reduced on an hours-long trip, I no longer strain to read a screen that takes my eyes off the road. And I am not missing HP traffic because of a local traffic stop on a back road or city street. At the beach, I turn on my Favorites List until I start back home, which is a quick changeover. And, when I get back home, I turn on my local FLs.
There is nothing here that couldn't be done with the FLs, with considerable tweaking of a dozen county locations and law enforcement jurisdictions. Switching Service Types doesn't work because there is no differentiation between city, county and state law enforcement, all bundled under "Law Enforcement." And, of course, the global database has no color coding by Service Type, which should be considered by the powers that be.
This is not a perfect solution: the next global update of the database wipes out my tweaks. It is possible to copy the state hpd to a safe directory and move it back after the update, but then I miss anything new in my state database. And, we have not seen the finished product, although I am confident the upgrade will do the trick.
So I'm going to be the one who shows their ignorance here but what would be some real world use cases for this? Is it simply to be able to correct/change info that is in the database? I guess previously it was only able to be done if the information had been imported into a Favorites List but this allows modification of the full db without importing into a FL?
