38.275 MHz FM [CSQ] sounds like other airports that serve dual-use (military and civilian). For example, military bases that half three advisory frequencies - one in the 30-88 MHz “FM” band, one in VHF AM band (either 126.200 MHz AM, another frequency in the standard 118.000 MHz - 136.975 MHz aircraft comm band “VHF” or a frequency in the 137-144 MHz band [still using AM mode], plus a third frequency in the 225-400 MHz “UHF” military band.

It - 38.2750 MHz FM [CSQ] is not a beacon, correct? It’s not similar to the YSD beacon on 36.6000 MHz FM [CSQ] at the CYSD airport (military base) in Alberta Canada…or am I missing that part?

Also; I haven’t heard YSD on 36.6 MHz in some time. I wonder if it’s QRT.

36.600 MHz is one of the “check first” frequencies for me. Same with the taxis on 31.200 MHz [203.5 Hz], 32.180 MHz [various tones], 32.940 MHz [various tones], the taxi dispatcher on 36.500 MHz, SNOTEL on 40.670 MHz [CSQ], the IFB / STL signals on 25.950 MHz FM [CSQ] and 26.110 MHz FM [CSQ], Fort Hood Range Control on 30.450 MHz FM [150.0 Hz]…and of course the fishing fleets on 31.100 MHz FM [CSQ], 30.800 MHz FM [CSQ], 31.800 MHz FM [CSQ] and the others, including the data/fax signals on 33.000 MHz FM.

Update:

As of 1416 local (US Eastern Daylight Time), I am hearing the Asian fishery radio chatter coming in almost full scale on 31.1000 MHz FM [CSQ].

Okay cool - I just wanted to make sure. I’ll add 38.275 MHz FM [CSQ] to my “frequencies to check” list.

From some research,

Queen Beatrix International Airport
Aruba

ICAO airport code: TNCA
IATA airport code: AUA

City: Oranjestad, Aruba

Name:
Reina Beatrix International Airport

Old name or alternate name:
Queen Beatrix International Airport

Old name or alternate name:
Oranjestad Queen Beatrix International Airport

Old name or alternate name:
Aruba Airport

120.900 MHz AM - Tower
128.850 MHz AM - Tower Alternate
121.900 MHz AM - Ground
132.100 MHz AM - ATIS
121.600 MHz AM - Apron Control
118.000 MHz AM - Approach (Backup?)
123.100 MHz AM - Search and Rescue
121.500 MHz AM - Emergency

Tower and approach are combined 24 hours a day (120.9 MHz). So it’s probably a safe bet that 38.2750 MHz FM [CSQ] is patched with 120.9000 MHz AM, or is at least simulcasting 120.9.

Edit: I just saw the separate thread about 38.275 MHz FM 38.2750 [CSQ] Queen Beatrix International Airport - Aruba approach control. Since 120.90 MHz is approach, I think the 38.275MHz FM + 120.900MHz AM patch is a fair assumption.

I’m going to presume that this is for some sort of military or security purpose. I’ve been to Aruba and remember 26-28 MHz being wall-to-wall, lowband being quiet (locally) but 148-174 MHz was very busy with business comms and lots of voice inversion. Every taxi cab had a VHF high band and/or a 27 MHz / CB antenna on it. 380-420 MHz had a lot of TETRA digital signals, likely the government services.

Just curious ... the Asian fishing receptions, does anyone have a thought on where they might be operating? Coast U.S. or Caribbean, or are these eminating from the Asian waters?

The Asian fishery radios are, originally anyway, from and approved for use by, China (PRC). Chinese regulations permit use of the radios for fishing fleet use only, including fishery company radio shore station “fleet broadcast”, Chinese waters and on the high seas.

The Chinese specification is for
27.500 MHz to 39.475 MHz (some radios say 27.5-39.5 MHz)
FM voice and data
Dual data mode - 300 baud ASK and 1200 MSK (or MFSK). Data is used for selective calling, location info broadcast, individual vessel call, and so on.
FM voice is carrier squelch [CSQ] only. No CTCSS or DCS use.
25 watt output

480 channels (25 kHz spacing between channels, sequential numbering,
so
channel 001 is 27.500 MHz FM
channel 002 is 27.525 MHz FM

up through 27 MHz, through all of 10 meters, up to
channel 478 is 39.425 MHz FM
channel 479 is 39.450 MHz FM
channel 480 is 39.475 MHz FM

However, these radios have proliferated throughout Asia and are likely being used throughout the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean..and possibly also the Atlantic.

Considering that DXers in Europe have heard the same comms when the band is open to Africa/Western Asia and India..these radios are likely used worldwide at this point.

The standard 480 channel 25 kHz version appears to be the most commonly used (by a significant margin). However, there are variants with a “1000 channel” mode.

Switching the radio into that mode switches the deviation from 4 kHz to 2.5 kHz and makes channel spacing 12.5 kHz. European DXers have heard fishery chatter on frequencies like 29.8875 MHz FM [CSQ], 32.1375 MHz FM [CSQ], 32.1875 MHz FM [CSQ], among others.

Radios sold by fishing equipment vendors based out of Taiwan, Malaysia and other locations are selling the Chinese-spec radios as “fishing boat marine FM radiotelephone” or “480 channel FM fishing fleet wireless intercom” and so on.

Often, if the signal is strong enough, you can hear the boat engine in the background.

To answer your question though - I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re hearing fishing fleets operating off the coast of South America or something.

kkn50, it’s possible the activity you’re hearing on 36.950 MHz FM [CSQ] and 36.325 MHz FM [CSQ] is one of these fishery networks.

From my location in south Texas, I hear them from morning until afternoons when the band is open. Typically I hear the US east coast mornings, the west coast afternoons, and South America throughout the day. The fleet I hear could well be off the coast of South America.

From my location in south Texas, I hear them from morning until afternoons when the band is open. Typically I hear the US east coast mornings, the west coast afternoons, and South America throughout the day. The fleet I hear could well be off the coast of South America.

I’m on the east coast (Richmond, Virginia) and usually hear them in the late afternoon through sunset. I’ve had a couple instances of them coming in strong hours after sunset and other instances of them coming in mid-morning or at noon.

31.1000 MHz FM [CSQ] is the first frequency I check now.

I can think of a couple instances in the evening (roughly 1930 to 2030 local
time) where the Costa Rican taxis (31.200 MHz [203.5 Hz PL], 32.180 MHz/32.940 MHz [various PL tones] and 36.500 MHz [74.4 Hz PL] were nowhere to be heard, WWV on 25.000 MHz AM wasn’t coming in, etc…but the fishery chatter was coming in no problem.

Just as many times I’ve heard the fisheries coming in at the same time as the Costa Rican taxis, Fort Hood on 30.450 FM, CHP on 39/42/44/45 MHz and numerous other signals from points west.

The mysteries of propagation are fascinating, especially considering the differences in distances from these transmitters to our receivers and the various factors at play. After all, most of these signals are coming from transmitters using vertical antennas (not NVIS setups!) so the skip zone is real.

Case in point, I’m hearing fishery chatter on 31.1000 MHz FM [CSQ] right now at 2000 local time with a handheld scanner and telescopic base loaded 27 MHz CB whip.

1850 local time, the Asian fisheries are just starting to fade in here on the East Coast. Very deep fading but making out the tell-tale FM chatter with data bursts.
