kkn50,

30.5800 MHz FM [CSQ] might be C.W. Wright Construction Company. I’ve logged them (locally) using carrier squelch as well as the more commonly associated with them PL tones. It seems like they have one of the channels in their lowband radios programmed with carrier squelch. As an aside, they are slowly migrating to the standard VHF high band itinerant frequencies; but all their trucks still have a low band antenna on them, or a low band antenna and a 1/4 wave VHF high band antenna.

Very quick band scan around 8:00pm local time to 8:20pm local time. Hearing the fishermen chatting away on

29.8250 MHz FM [CSQ]
30.7000 MHz FM [CSQ]
30.7750 MHz FM [CSQ]
30.8000 MHz FM [CSQ]
30.9500 MHz FM [CSQ] very weak
31.1000 MHz FM [CSQ] very busy
31.7000 MHz FM [CSQ]
31.8000 MHz FM [CSQ]

Other logs:
25.9500 MHz FM [CSQ] - Unmodulated carrier - has been coming in basically daily for weeks and weeks now, if not months. Often it’s a better band opening indicator than WWV!
29.8500 MHz FM [CSQ] - Data, possibly paging
31.2000 MHz FM [67.0 Hz] - mic key up, followed by data burst.
31.2000 MHz FM [203.5 Hz] - Taxi dispatch
32.1800 MHz FM [141.3 Hz] - Taxi dispatch, good signal
33.0000 MHz FM [CSQ] - Data bursts, probably related to the fishing fleet radio networks

Between 1315 and 1330 local time:

30.4500 MHz FM [150.0 Hz] - Several transmissions heard, barely coming through, although signal strength seemed to be improving
31.2000 MHz FM [203.5 Hz] - Just barely making it, the usual Spanish language taxi dispatch
32.1800 MHz FM [77.0 Hz] - Got enough for a tone squelch decode
32.9400 MHz FM [141.3 Hz] - Very weak, taxi dispatch
32.9500 MHz FM [150.0 Hz] - Decoded tone squelch as 151.4 Hz but the signal had all the characteristics of a military signal (wide FM deviation) - strong mic key ups, no audio heard

Afternoon listening 26 April 2023 VHF low band DX. VHF low skip.
Start: 1415 local time. End: 1445 local time (eastern daylight time).
Location: Richmond, VA.
Receiver: Pro-651 (Pro-106) with HYS telescopic 27 MHz CB antenna (51 inch antenna) with top section collapsed.

30.0000 MHz FM [CSQ] Carrier, fading

30.4500 MHz FM [150.0 Hz PL] Fort Hood, also lots of fading

31.2000 MHz FM [203.5 Hz PL] Taxi dispatch, weak but readable

32.9400 MHz FM [141.3 Hz PL] Taxi dispatch

35.1800 MHz FM [162.2 Hz PL] Tow truck service (California) - very weak

35.5000 MHz FM [CSQ] Paging

36.3000 MHz FM [CSQ] Data, previously monitored during band openings

36.5000 MHz FM [74.4 Hz PL] Taxi dispatch - Spanish language

36.6000 MHz FM [CSQ] Weak…something - unable to positively ID. Could be a carrier, or the YSD beacon (which I haven’t heard in a while) or something else

37.1000 MHz FM [150.0 Hz PL] US military - Radio checks, did not copy a callsign

37.1200 MHz FM [74.4 Hz PL] SCADA data bursts

38.6600 MHz FM [173.8 Hz PL] Taxi dispatch, came in full scale at tune in, then faded down into the noise, rapid fading back up to full quieting. Best I’ve heard this system so far. Could hear the base station and the mobiles replying on 38.660 MHz 173.8 PL.

40.1750 MHz FM [118.8 Hz PL or CSQ?] Strong carrier, unmodulated…then heard data in the background. Lots of AC hum or other similar noise on signal. Scanner decoded 118.8 Hz tone, which I believe is due to the AC hum but I could have just been hearing the tone squelch. Equally strong on 40.1700 MHz FM and 40.1800 MHz FM

40.6700 MHz FM [CSQ] SNOTEL - deep fades

Marvinsuggs, chances are the comms you're hearing on 30.78 MHz are actually 30.775 MHz (if its fishery radio comms). 30.775 MHz FM [CSQ] is one of the busier frequencies for those networks, at least in my monitoring. It's almost as consistent as 31.1 MHz FM [CSQ] or 31.8 MHz FM [CSQ].

Logs from 27 April to yesterday 1 May 2023. Richmond, VA. Portable receiver (Pro-651, same thing as a Pro-106) with a HYS 27 MHz CB telescopic whip antenna.

29.7750 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 29.775MHz
29.8000 MHz FM [CSQ] - POCSAG paging - likely European origin
29.8250 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter, weak - FM fishery radio 29.825MHz
29.8500 MHz FM [CSQ] - POCSAG paging - likely European origin
29.9500 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 29.950MHz
29.9500 MHz FM [CSQ] - POCSAG paging - likely European origin
30.2000 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 30.200MHz
30.3000 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 30.300MHz
30.4500 MHz FM [150.0 Hz PL] Decoded as 151.4 Hz PL - Fort Hood Range Control
30.7750 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 30.775MHz
30.9000 MHz FM [CSQ] - FM carrier, very deep fades, then back to almost full quieting
30.9500 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 30.950MHz
31.1000 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 31.100MHz
31.1500 MHz FM [CSQ] - POCSAG paging - very rapid bursts - European origin
31.1500 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 31.150MHz
31.2000 MHz FM [203.5 Hz PL] - Spanish language taxi dispatch - MDC1200 "squawk" readable even in poor conditions
31.8000 MHz FM [CSQ] - Asian fishing fleet radio chatter - FM fishery radio 31.800MHz
32.1800 MHz FM [77.0 Hz PL] - Taxi cab dispatch - Costa Rica
32.1800 MHz FM [141.3 Hz PL] - Taxi cab dispatch - Costa Rica
32.9400 MHz FM [74.4 Hz PL] - UNID user, possibly a bad tone decode
32.9400 MHz FM [77.0 Hz PL] - Taxi cab dispatch - Costa Rica
32.9400 MHz FM [118.8 Hz PL] - Strong "pulsing" data or over the horizon radar, 118.8 Hz tone decoded immediately
32.9400 MHz FM [141.3 Hz PL] - Taxi cab dispatch - Costa Rica
33.0000 MHz FM [CSQ] - Weak FM chatter, presumably Asian fishery radio
34.0500 MHz FM [150.0 Hz PL] - Decoded as 151.4 Hz, FM carrier [previously monitored on this frequency]
35.1800 MHz FM [162.2 Hz PL] - Tow truck dispatch (California)
36.2500 MHz FM [CSQ] - Rapid data bursts
36.3000 MHz FM [CSQ] - Data, UNID source, possibly fishery related
36.5000 MHz FM [74.4 Hz PL] - Taxi cab dispatch - Latin America
36.6000 MHz FM [CSQ] - YSD Beacon - CYSD Heliport - very poor copy, but I heard the tell-tale long tone burst after Morse ID
38.6600 MHz FM [173.8 Hz PL] - Taxi cab dispatch - Latin America, very dramatic fading
39.0000 MHz FM [CSQ] - FM carrier, unknown source

Your logs from TX are impressive. I wish we were as active here as you and others have been. But I've also not seen anything logged from NW Ohio. So I might be in a bad location. Although, I did get an e-mail from a fellow in Washington state who heard one of our low band transmissions.

The 26.1100 is interesting as it appears they are running from multiple sites. I suspect they are using it as perhaps a crossband repeater, using UHF transmission to a site, and then 26.11 to pop back to the studios/offices. License attached. Note the expiration date, which is not unusual these days.

29.779 mhz very weak RTTY much noise here unkown who it is. Tons of noise here making it very hard to listen.
26.375 mhz freebanders heavy noise many stations spanish beeps ect.
All heard 5-5-2023 Angelo
29.779 MHz (or 29.780 MHz) is home to several FSK / RTTY data signals that seem to pop up pretty often during band openings. They’re likely not originating from the U.S.. They could be Datawell Waverider data buoys (which operate on numerous frequencies in the 25-40 MHz range).

Unusual comm this morning. (Edit: Sunday, 7 May 2023 @ 10:06 Eastern). Way down in noise with heavy fades, 29.7300 pl-123.0 "Hey, Kevin, I'll switch trucks and meet ..... (heavy fade) .... and go from there." Other station, (presumably who he was talking to), was way to weak to make out any words. Second transmission ".... taking 203 as 219 is out of service." Whole exchange was about a minute and a half. Will be watching for this again.

29.7300 MHz FM 123.0 Hz PL.

I honestly believe there are a lot more users of the 29.710 MHz FM, 29.730 MHz FM, 29.750 MHz FM, 29.770 MHz FM and 29.790 MHz FM land mobile (Part 90) frequencies in the U.S. than there are licensed users in the USA. I’m sure there’s a lot of business band users with expired licenses that just don’t know any better. I know of a couple business users local to me that are operating on VHF low band under expired licenses (truck to truck comms, ready mix concrete, 43 MHz band).

That’s not to say what you heard on 29.73 MHz wasn’t licensed. It just seems like that little sliver of spectrum 29.7 MHz to 30.000 MHz has a lot more activity than meets the eye. There’s POCSAG paging systems every 50 kHz from 29.75 MHz to 29.95 MHz (I think they’re somewhere in/near Europe), there’s unexplained data signals, the fishery radio systems / fishing fleets, Canadian paging, and of course there’s the out of band CB operators/freebanders.

29.750 MHz, 29.800 MHz, 29.850 MHz and 29.900 MHz are some of the frequencies I routinely check for paging activity as part of a check to see if the band is open to Europe.

As far as logs go:

32.940 MHz active right now (1631 local eastern time). YL dispatcher “in the park, in the park” [pause] A02” “A02”

Well I know of one licensed user. But I will concede there are probably more unlicensed on the frequencies. Some are just freebanders.

Some are preppers and survivalists who use 25-31 for comms (discretely). Very rare to hear them speak. They also operate packet, which I logged in Upper Michigan at 10:22PM, Friday, April 10, 2020, on 26.312500 MHz, narrow band FM. Good enough to copy his/her traffic.

There is one station I've yet to ID which operated on 29.740, 29.750, or 29.760. "I believe" his ops are in the south as I've heard him mention highways, and names unique to KY, TN, and GA. It sounds like he may be a car carrier for hire. He's been a mystery for at least 8 years.
