It's a NXDN feature, actually it's an option. An Alias doesn't have to be programmed into the radios, but if it is, that is transmitted over the air. It's very handy when trying to track down a system using DSD+. It will be convenient with the scanners as well, I think.
Speaking of "Aliases" is it possible to have that feature on the other types of systems as well? DMR etc..
Or is this simply just an NXDN feature?
Some systems want digital, but can't afford P25. Or can't get grants to buy P25. NXDN and DMR are less expensive ways to do that. With DMR, a system can opt to use one time slot for voice and one for data. I've seen some non public safety systems that are running conventional DMR with Slot 1 used for AVL and messaging, while Slot 2 is used for voice.
Additionally, some private ambulance services and private security companies like DMR or NXDN because they can have some degree of voice privacy (if they want it).
I am just curious why people seem so interested in NXDN when it is a business standard in the digital world. There's nothing wrong with it or the users. I'm just surprised so many users like to listen to other than public safety or aviation. I caught something on cable TV about some Backwoods Sheriff Department and they were running for repeater site DMR system so I guess it could happen. I'm just curious. Don't mind me.
