I am hearing the CW identifier on 857.4875 MHz which was Wheeling PD's F1 repeater. Other than that, no voice traffic on that frequency or the F3 repeater (859.2375 MHz). The whole transition to Starcom by Wheeling is kind of bittersweet for me. I was involved in the planning and construction of the 800 system and in fact put out the first call on the new system when it became active and the transition was made from 470.7625 MHz which Wheeling shared with Northbrook PD. At the time, if I recall correctly, only District 15, Gurnee and Rolling Meadows were on 800 MHz. Wheeling's system did have some talk-out power - we were running 75 watt base stations into Bogner 10dB gain antennas from 130 foot water towers. There were two transmitter sites - one at Milwaukee and Dundee and the other at Milwaukee and Lake-Cook. For whatever reason, the Milwaukee-Dundee site reached out further. Ahhhh, the memories.
Tom, as you recall, When I worked for Woodridge PD, we put our conventional 800 MHz Spectra-Tac systems on the air at about the same time. "Our" current F1 (856.4625 PL 103.5) is STILL on the air, however, being used by Public Works. I don't know how many of the receive sites are still active, but AFAIK, the transmitter is still at the 2nd location, which was moved about 15 years after the initial F1 system was installed. I've heard NOTHING on old F2 (857.4625 PL 103.5) as both freqs are still in all my scanners.
I retired 10.5 years ago from the agency, and the system was given the responsibility of a civilian communications supervisor who had little to no technical knowledge of any of the infrastructures. The system was used when the agency switched dispatch over to DU-COMM several years ago, and since, they have gone to Starcom 21 but share a network with Lisle and Darien PD's. It was nice to be on our own private channels (F1 & F2) for many years.
