The only use case I can see for logging (not hearing) encrypted groups is to note which RIDs operate there. If those RIDs are known to belong to a particular entity, then it is a good bet that the encrypted group is theirs also.

This is how I have identified several encrypted police TACs and an encrypted EMS TAC on a local system.

An observation about NXDN alias identification. On one of the NXDN trunks I've been following, it can take 3-4 seconds before the software identifies and displays an Alias. If the transmission is very short, say just an acknowledgement, then the software doesn't have enough time to identify the Alias.

It does seem that once an Alias is identified, the scanner stores that data.

Not an issue, just an observation.

Just to add some info, I have a couple of Kenwood radios and have monitored a couple of NXDN systems and sometimes even the radio behaves this way - I think it may be more a system issue (i.e. weak signal doesn't catch the alias; too short; something) and not a problem with the scanner.

I'm not saying the scanners are doing perfect (maybe they are, maybe they aren't) but with a radio I have seen the same as you described happen.

Not yet. If the talk group doesn't release the conversation, the alias will continue to show. If the talk group is released and the scanner returns to scanning and you haven't saved the alias ID, the UID will reappear until the scanner re identifies the alias ID.

Yepper, you MUST press E and go through the actual process of saving the RID/UID *Alias*.

Thanks. I probably won't save the UIDs since I'm not that invested in knowing which unit is doing what. At least not in tracking units. I'm just happy that the feature is working as intended.

Another side note, which someone mentioned. .14 and .15 reinserted false TG IDs into Con+ systems. What I called "Slot confusion" since it seemed that the scanner was processing audio from one slot, but the TG ID was for the other slot.

That seems to have stopped with either .19 or .20. It wasn't a huge problem, but it was occasionally an annoying one.

Not yet. If the talk group doesn't release the conversation, the alias will continue to show. If the talk group is released and the scanner returns to scanning and you haven't saved the alias ID, the UID will reappear until the scanner re identifies the alias ID.

Ever watched a car stereo trying to update RDS text (the text that comes over the air on FM stations)?

You might see "--HOTOG----" at first, then "PHOTOGRA--" the next time, then "PHOTOGRAPH BY DEF LEPPARD" when all is said and done. I believe that RDS is delivered in several small chunks, and I suggest that NXDN OTA aliases might be sent in similar fashion (or, as you say, we don't pick up every character on the first/second/third/nth time it's broadcasted).

I have seen this too. This feature was an unexpected surprise that I've found to be quite useful since I text tag my UID's anyway. I remember someone posting that in SDR once they are displayed, they are automatically saved. That would be the icing on the cake, but I'm happy saving them myself. But you never know what those engineers have up their sleeves for upcoming Friday's.

Rock, at least good Rock, died with Freddy Mercury. Now it all sounds like a china cabinet falling over.

I was at Memphis when Freddy Played the GUITAR on stage for the first time for Chrazy Little Thing during the Another One Bites the Dust Tour. Freddy and Brian May were live on ROCK 103 talking up the Concert while we were driving into Memphis. It was a great show.

If you are not running 1.20.00, update to that version using Sentinel.

Make a debug log, and post it in the .20 firmware feedback thread.

Running the latest, 1.20.00. Since the box is freezing, I'm dubious that any log entries will help, but I'll see what happens. Thanks.

I'm having a similar issue with freezing. Sometimes but not often the 436 will just freeze and reboot, I think it's only with a certain DMR system tho.

Using TxWARN? It's the only System that I have this issue with.

Thanks!!

I have several similarly large trunked systems in my area that I used for testing (WV-SIRN, MD FIRST, First Energy, and others). None of them caused any lag or lack of responsiveness to keys or controls when attempting to scroll to a different system during an active site hold. IMO the problem is most likely a card issue.

The freeze and reboot issue is also probably a card problem.

Get a new 32GB high endurance type card designed for dashcams and other applications where the card is being written to continuously, and see if that fixes the problem.

Freeze and reboot is a SD card issue from the past. When I first got my 1st 436 I had that problem after about 6 months replaced the SD card no problems for over 2 years. Using a Class 10 Sandisk card.

In regards to the user who actually wanted to HEAR the encrypted audio.. My older GRE-500 scanner does this and I actually prefer it. Why you ask?? I use the presence of encrypted audio or all of a sudden the use of encrypted talk groups that usually are not very active, if at all, as a sort of situation awareness tool. It means to me, that something big is happening locally to me that is serious enough the powers that be deem it warrants encryption for secrecy. On my 436, which skips right over it, I never get this type of heads-up about something going on.

Now of course, if in a location everything is always encrypted, I would not find this method to work, but luckily in my location, or least what I normally listen to, this works for me.

Was just trying to explain why someone might want to hear the encryption without secretly working on some holy-grail type illegal decrypting software.
