I'd like to see the avoid button work somewhat better when in discovery of conventional frequencies. Sometimes it'll hang on a open carrier that is present on the frequency then I'd have to hit avoid several times, or the carrier drops and it hangs on the channel and won't avoid until carrier squelch breaks again.

Yeah sounds like there is a lot you don't need to scan in the nation wide lists out of your area and service types may all be enabled beyond the normal.

Probably be good to save the data, then start clean from a fresh slate of what you truly want in your area.

This is off topic now but do you have any tips on making my list, leaner? I'm used to the RS 164 and 651 scanners, so I essentially selected every freq. The 436 can take 30s to get through a list, my 651 is seconds. Is there a way to reasonably add from a notepad file or excel?

P25 about the same, which isn't bad at all. Checking on NXDN now, but both systems that I can hear from home are relatively slow.

Funny thing in all the years I've had my 436 and 536, I never really had a problem with simulcast. I travel up to the North Country in New York State, and the Central New York System is simulcast. Always clear as a bell.

I am not sure if you drive through Oneida County when you travel up North, but you should try your 436 or 536 on the county P25 Phase 2 system. The Oneida County system sounds horrible on my 536. The simulcast issues on this system is the reason for my upgrade to the SDS200. My initial testing of the new firmware doesn't sound any better. My plan is to drag the 536 to Rome tomorrow and see how it performs closer to the towers. In my humble opinion, the difference between the 536 and SDS200 is night and day on this simulcast system.

Based on my research, that is kind of the consensus. I think as experienced scanners, we understand that some systems/rigs work quite well in some areas and some not as much..

OK, I tried updating my 436 with the latest version of Sentinel. I have selected the correct radio in the software, whether its the firmware update or database update, the update fails. Is it due to a busy Uniden server or something on my end? Here is a screen shot of the issue:
Any help is appreciated.

Your computer is seeing your scanner as being connected?

I am taking a total shot in the dark here but this similar topic came up a few updates ago in a different thread.

The updates for both the database and firmware are done utilizing FTP. If you are using a satellite provider such as Hughes net they block access to FTP connection making it impossible to download updates. If you have not tried it already the next thing I would do would be to test using a different Internet connection such as a different Wi-Fi network or using the cellular hotspot function from your phone.

Yeah, my next suggestion was going to be to check and make sure your user has permission to access that folder/location that Sentinel was attempting to store the update files before it was going to write them to the scanner. Not the first one to have that issue so don't worry.

UPMan,

Now to the 536!

The 536 update went well. On both the 436 and 536 digital voice clarity is indeed greatly improved.
On that finicky laptop of mine, I did use admin access, but I have a feeling it was one of those internet firewall programs like Malware Bytes and Spy-bot Search and Destroy etc that may have blocked access. I did not have the luxury of time to trouble shoot the issue extensively.
Its a moot point now, since the issue on my end has been resolved by updating both scanners successfully.
Thank you again UPMan and for everyone's support and guidance.
On this point, it is closed.

Have a great week!

Thank you Upman and uniden crew for this recent firmware update. My BCD436HP never sounded so good especially on our P25 digital trunked system here in Illinois. for poop and laughter I put the stock antenna back on to see how it would sound. this thing is a beast now. even with the stock antenna it decodes pretty well where I am. thank you again for this update and the continued support on the x36 series scanners.

I drive through Oneida on the NYS Thruway. So far I haven't had a problem listening to Utica PD or the Sheriff. So far LOL

I've driven through on the Thruway and also along Route 49. I honestly can't remember having any problems listening. I'm going to see how it is with this update. I use a 536 and a little mag mount twenty dollar antenna. Maybe it depends where you are, I don't know.

To the point where I'm rethinking selling my 436HP to buy a SDS100. I usually like to have the latest portable scanner for road trips. I'm going to Indy tomorrow and bringing the 436 with me. If it works well there, I'll definitely keep it.

Then I have to decide about my 536HP. It's a bit beat up on the cosmetics and I don't have all of the accessories. As a result, the resale value isn't great even though it has DMR and NXDN activated. I'm going to up date it and then decide what to do with it.

But, I digress.

Digital audio MUCH better!
